MSCHE Announces Accreditation Actions from June 2019 Meeting

The Middle States Commission on Higher Education has made public the accreditation actions approved at its June 27, 2019, meeting.

All 11 institutions of the University of Puerto Rico system have been removed from show cause and have had their accreditation reaffirmed following compliance with the Commission’s standards for accreditation and requirements of affiliation.

An additional six institutions had their accreditation reaffirmed and were removed from warning:

“All of the institutions that had their accreditation reaffirmed have now come into compliance with the Middle States Commission on Higher Education,” said Commission Chair Dr. Margaret M. McMenamin. “In the case of the University of Puerto Rico system, the Commission recognizes the work performed by each of the institutions with the support of the UPR system. The Commission understands that while the institutions are now in compliance, this is not the end but the beginning. The institutions, in collaboration with the system, need to address their sustainability into the future.”

Five institutions were unable to demonstrate compliance with the Commission’s standards for accreditation and requirements of affiliation. The institutions remain accredited while on warning or probation. Following the submission of monitoring reports, the institutions will host a follow-up team visit.

In accordance with federal regulations, institutions can only be in a non-compliance status for a 24-month period. Following that time period, the Commission may grant a 12-month extension of the non-compliance period for good cause. After the first extension, the Commission has the option to grant a second and final 12-month extension for good cause.

In addition, the Commission approved the Complex Substantive Change that is leading to the merger of Cumberland County College and Rowan College at Gloucester County. The combined institution will be listed as Rowan College of South Jersey, effective July 1, 2019.
