On May 22, 2023, the Middle States Commission on Higher Education acted to acknowledge the institutional closure of Medaille University while on warning effective August 31, 2023. Accreditation ceased effective August 31, 2023. As of September 1, 2023, Medaille University is no longer accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education www.msche.org. In accordance with Commission policy and federal regulations, the teach-out plan must provide for the equitable treatment of students to complete their education if the Commission were to withdraw accreditation, and include any signed, teach-out agreements that the institution has entered into or intends to enter into with another institution. To note that the institution hosted a virtual site visit in lieu of an on-site visit in accordance with the United States Department of Education (USDE) guidelines published March 17, 2020. To warn the institution that its accreditation may be in jeopardy because of insufficient evidence that the institution is currently in compliance with Standard II (Ethics and Integrity). To note that the institution remains accredited while on warning. To note further that federal regulations limit the period during which an institution may be in non-compliance. To request a monitoring report due March 1, 2023, demonstrating evidence that the institution has achieved and can sustain ongoing compliance with Standard II including but not limited to (1) honesty and truthfulness in all publications and communications, in all formats, for internal and external communities (Standard II) and (2) a campus climate that fosters respect among all constituencies (Standard II). To request that the monitoring report also provide further evidence of (1) adequate fiscal and human resources, including physical and technical infrastructure, to support operations (Standard VI); (2) a clearly articulated and transparent governance structure that outlines roles, responsibilities, and accountability for decision-making by each constituency, including governing body, administration, faculty, staff, and students (Standard VII); and (3) a governing body that provides oversight at the policy level and is informed in all its operations by principles of good practice in board governance and ensures that neither the governing body nor its individual members interferes in the day-to-day operations of the institution (Standard VII). To remind the institution of its obligation to make freely available to the Commission accurate, fair, and complete information on all aspects of the institution and its operations (Requirement of Affiliation 14). To direct a follow-up team visit following submission of the monitoring report. To note the visit may also fulfill the verification requirements of the USDE guidelines.
