New Use of Artificial Intelligence Accreditation Policy and Procedures

The Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE) continues to encourage innovation in higher education. The Commission has approved new Use of Artificial Intelligence Policy and Procedures that reflect this commitment and incorporate emerging research and best practices in this area:

The policy and procedures establish broad expectations for the lawful, ethical, transparent, and secure use of AI. Institutions should ensure that the governance, procurement, and use of AI is aligned with the Commission’s Standards for Accreditation and Requirements of Affiliation, policy, procedures, applicable law, as well as the institution’s own policies. Institutions utilizing AI tools and platforms should incorporate AI within existing data governance and information security policies and procedures. The Commission does not espouse a specific AI tool or platform for accreditation activities but will allow the use of AI for preparation of accreditation materials. Institutions are responsible for the accuracy and integrity of all materials developed and submitted in their name to the Commission. The procedures also address expectations for use of AI by Commission staff.

These documents underwent a Call for Public Comments from April 1-26, 2025. Feedback from public comment is used to clarify and strengthen proposed policies.
