About the Workshop

Assessment in higher education has traditionally focused on examining student learning within the classroom. Student learning however can only be understood through a comprehensive lens that illustrates how all areas of a college, directly or indirectly, impact student learning and the environment for student learning. Administrative, educational, and student support (AES) units are part of the foundation for institutional effectiveness and assessment. Systematic and continuous assessment is essential to AES units, however many institutions continue to struggle to develop processes that align with the assessment needs of these particular areas. Institutional effectiveness is about documenting how a college or university is progressing towards achievement of its mission and goals and assessment serves as the primary tool for gathering and analyzing information necessary to achieving these goals. To do this effectively, institutions must develop strong institutional effectiveness models and organized, systematic, and structured institutional effectiveness and assessment plans for AES units. This workshop is designed to help colleges and universities grow and expand their AES assessments and evaluation in alignment with a comprehensive institutional effectiveness process.

 

Learning Outcomes:

•Define institutional effectiveness within their own institutional context

•Describe the role of administrative, educational, and student support services (AES) units in student learning and support of the environment for student learning

•Differentiate between student learning outcomes and support outcomes using appropriate taxonomies

•Develop effective and well-aligned AES unit missions, goals, and outcomes

•Compare methods of assessment for AES units
