Accreditation Actions

The following represents the MSCHE accreditation actions taken in the last ten (10) years. For more information, see the Commission’s Accreditation Actions Policy and Procedures and the Substantive Change Policy and Procedures.

  • November 17, 2022
    To acknowledge receipt of the supplemental information report. To note that the institution hosted a virtual site visit in lieu of an on-site visit in accordance with the United States Department of Education (USDE) guidelines published March 17, 2020. To request a supplemental information report, due April 1, 2023, documenting further evidence of (1) comprehensive long-range planning processes (Standard VI); (2) clearly documented and communicated planning and improvement processes that provide for constituent participation (Standard VI); and (3) the assessment of the adequacy and efficient utilization of institutional resources required to support the institution's mission and goals (Standard VI). To note that a verification visit is required by USDE guidelines and will be conducted within a reasonable period of time following the virtual site visit. The next evaluation visit is scheduled for 2028-2029.?

    To acknowledge receipt of the self-study report. To note that the institution hosted a virtual site visit in lieu of an on-site visit in accordance with the United States Department of Education (USDE) guidelines published March 17, 2020. To reaffirm accreditation. To request a supplemental information report, due September 1, 2022, documenting further evidence of (1) comprehensive long-range planning processes (Standard VI); (2) adequate fiscal and human resources, including physical and technical infrastructure, to support operations (Standard VI); (3) comprehensive planning for facilities, infrastructure and technology that include consideration of sustainability and deferred maintenance (Standard VI); and (4) qualified administrators, sufficient in number, to enable the Chief Executive Officer to discharge his/her duties effectively (Standard VII). To direct a follow-up team visit following submission of the supplemental information report. To note the visit will also fulfill the verification requirements of the USDE guidelines. To direct a prompt Commission liaison guidance visit to discuss the Commission's expectations. The next evaluation visit is scheduled for 2028-2029.

    To delay the On-Site Evaluation visit scheduled for Spring 2021 due to extraordinary circumstances related to coronavirus (COVID-19) interruptions and to continue accreditation. To note the institution remains accredited during a delay granted by the Commission. The Evaluation visit will be scheduled in accordance with Commission policy and procedures.
  • June 17, 2020
    To acknowledge receipt of the substantive change request. To include the second alternative delivery method-distance education program (Master of Divinity) within the institution's scope of accreditation. To note that written evidence of necessary approvals has been provided. To note that the Commission may rescind this action if the requested substantive change is not implemented within one calendar year from the date of this action. The next accreditation visit is scheduled for 2020-2021.
  • April 16, 2020
    To acknowledge receipt of formal written notice from the institution in response to the Commission's request of March 9, 2020. To temporarily waive Substantive Change Policy and Procedures and allow the use of distance education to accommodate students impacted by coronavirus (COVID-19) interruptions, in accordance with United States Department of Education (USDE) guidelines published March 5, 2020. Continued use of distance education beyond the limitations of USDE guidelines will require substantive change approval in accordance with Substantive Change Policy and Procedures. This flexibility is not available for clock-hour courses that lead to licensure if the licensing body will not accept distance learning courses or hours or give credit for them toward the number of hours a student must complete. The next evaluation visit is scheduled for 2020-2021.

    To accept the Periodic Review Report, to reaffirm accreditation and to commend the institution for the quality of the Periodic Review Report and process. To request a monitoring report, due October 1, 2017, documenting further development and implementation of a financial planning and budgeting process aligned with the institution's mission and goals, and a plan that provides for an annual budget and multi-year budget projections (Standard 3).     To acknowledge receipt of the substantive change request, to affirm the institution's decision to close the additional location at Raritan Bay Medical Center, Perth Amboy, NJ, and to provisionally include the additional locations at Atlantic Health Overlook Hospital, Summit, NJ and Atlantic Health Morristown Memorial Hospital, Morristown, NJ, within the scope of the institution's accreditation pending a site visit within six months of commencing operations at the sites. The Commission requires written notification within thirty days of the commencement of operations at the additional locations. In the event that operations at the additional location do not commence within one calendar year from the approval of this action, approval will lapse. The next evaluation visit is scheduled for 2011-2012.

Information about the Middle States Commission on Higher Education

The Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE) is an institutional accreditor in the United States and is recognized by the U.S. Secretary of Education and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA). MSCHE accreditation applies to an institution as a whole rather than the specific programs within an institution. MSCHE does not approve or accredit individual programs. The MSCHE accreditation review cycle is continuous and accreditation does not expire. Each institution is reevaluated and monitored on a regular and consistent basis in accordance with the institution’s assigned accreditation review cycle and Commission policy and procedures. An institution maintains its accreditation unless it is voluntarily surrendered or withdrawn by the Commission for cause, after the institution has been afforded due process. The institution’s current accreditation phase and accreditation status are displayed on the institution’s listing in the Institution Directory and in the Statement of Accreditation Status (SAS).
