About the Workshop
General education programs play an essential role in the development of students; however, assessing the effectiveness of these programs is challenging because their curricula include multiple courses taught by faculty members from different departments. In this workshop, participants will discuss how to develop sustainable and effective organizational structures and processes for assessing and improving the educational effectiveness of general education programs. The workshop will begin with a brief review of Middle States expectations for assessing student learning in general education programs and a discussion on developing effective general education learning goals. The workshop’s primary focus will include identifying and using direct and indirect measures to determine how well students are achieving general education learning goals, communicating assessment results, using these results to improve, and determining whether assessment-informed changes have achieved the desired effect. The workshop will close with participants discussing how to assess and improve the effectiveness of general education assessment processes. The workshop format will include presentations, discussions, and small group and individual activities.
•Understand the Commission’s expectations related to general education.
•Develop clearly stated general education learning goals with defensible standards that are interrelated with other learning goals across the institution.
•Align courses and relevant educational experiences with general education learning goals.
•Identify appropriate direct and indirect measures to determine how well students are meeting those goals.
•Develop collaborative structures and processes that facilitate meaningful discussions about assessment results and the use of those results to improve the educational effectiveness of general education programs.
•Assess and document the impact of assessment-informed changes.
•Periodically assess and improve the effectiveness of general education assessment processes.
