MSCHE Commissioner Steven Rose Passes Away
The Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE) is saddened to learn of the passing of one of our Commissioners, Steven M. Rose, on March 24, 2026.

Steve was appointed as a Commissioner in January 2020. He also served as President of Passaic County Community College (NJ) since 1996.
“Steve’s warm presence, thoughtful reflections, and unwavering dedication to us will be profoundly missed,” President Heather F. Perfetti said. “Steve was a champion for his students, institution, community, and most broadly for accreditation, with his caring and generous leadership providing an impactful and lasting legacy across our higher education community. Steve is already missed.”
Steve served as a peer evaluator, including as Team Chair, and served in leadership roles with the Commission through its committees. Steve was also a constant presence at Commission events, including our Annual Conference, where he most recently appeared on the main stage during a fireside chat. We extend our deepest condolences to all who had the privilege of knowing and working alongside Steve.
Steve’s leadership of Passaic County Community College touched communities throughout Passaic County and shaped higher education and workforce initiatives at the state and national levels. He began at Passaic County Community College in 1987 and previously served as Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of Faculty, as well as Dean of Admissions and Enrollment Management. Passaic County Community College has released a statement.
