On March 13-15, 2023, Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE) President Heather F. Perfetti and Director for Strategic Partnerships and Advocacy Nicole Biever participated in the Civic Learning and Democracy Engagement Coalition (CLDE) Leadership Forum on Democracy, Civic Learning, and Student Success: Evidence, Equity, and Collective Impact in College Park, Maryland, with Assistant Provost for Assessment and Community College Education for the State University of New York Deborah Moeckel. Other institutions, systems, and partners of MSCHE also attended the event, which was held in support of CLDE’s initiatives to involve all students in civic inquiry and democracy engagement, with equity and inclusion as top priorities.

“I am grateful for the opportunity to engage with members of the CLDE Coalition, institutional and system representatives, accreditors, and other organizations who support this important work,” said President Perfetti. “The Commission’s seven standards for accreditation infuse civic engagement throughout, and we appreciate this opportunity to demonstrate how institutions can leverage accreditation in support of civic learning and engagement using the existing approach to our standards.”

In 2020-2021, the Commission highlighted institutional work focused on community and civic engagement through a five-part webinar series titled Guided Conversations: MSCHE Accreditation Standards and Community and Civic Engagement in collaboration with Transform Mid-Atlantic, Partners for Campus-Community Engagement, and Engage New Jersey.

In September 2021, MSCHE joined the CLDE Shared Commitment pledge and the call for civic inquiry, practice in civil discourse, and collaborative work on pressing public problems to be part of each postsecondary student’s educational pathway while broadening all college students’ civic, historical, global, and intercultural knowledge.
