Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE) President Dr. Heather F. Perfetti and the chief executive officers of the Council of Regional Accrediting Commissions (C-RAC) met with United States Department of Education (USDE) Undersecretary Mr. James Kvaal, Assistant Secretary of Education for Postsecondary Education Dr. Nasser Paydar, and Senior Advisor Ms. Antoinette Flores in Washington, D.C., during the C-RAC fall retreat held on October 5-6, 2022. In addition, C-RAC met with the American Council on Education (ACE) President Dr. Ted Mitchell and Executive Director and Senior Vice President Mr. Mushtaq Gunja and the State Higher Education Executive Officers Association (SHEEO) Vice President for Academic Affairs and Equity Initiatives Dr. John Lane.

President Perfetti, who also serves as Vice-Chair for C-RAC, participated in two days of meetings to discuss important topics of mutual interest with the other chief executive officers who lead the accrediting agency members of C-RAC. Those important higher education topics included accreditation policies and practices, the student experience and success, data, accreditation advocacy, and the political environment.

“I am grateful for this opportunity to engage with leaders from USDE, ACE, and SHEEO and my fellow C-RAC chief executive officers as we work to advance quality, continuous improvement, innovation, and accountability across the country for the higher education community,” stated Dr. Perfetti.

The Council of Regional Accrediting Commissions (C-RAC) represents the seven organizations responsible for the accreditation of roughly 3,000 of the nation’s colleges and universities. The work of C-RAC helps ensure that students attending accredited postsecondary institutions in the United States have access to quality education opportunities. The public can feel confident that the colleges and universities accredited by C-RAC members are stable and held accountable for student outcomes.

Other C-RAC chief executive officers who participated in the meetings included the following:
