Advocacy Needs Percolate through Inaugural Virtual Coffee with the Commission Event
With coffee and Danish in hand, a group of 16 presidents representing institutions from New Jersey and Delaware met with MSCHE staff for the first Virtual Coffee with the Commission on February 23, 2021. The new initiative launched by the Commission presented an opportunity for an informal conversation about important issues in higher education.
MSCHE President Dr. Heather Perfetti, Senior Vice President for Accreditation Relations Dr. Christy Faison, and Senior Vice President and Chief of Staff Dr. Stephen Pugliese gave Commission updates before turning the conversation to advocacy. Highlighted for the presidents were MSCHE’s efforts through recent letters and amicus briefs to support institutions and students as well as the Commission’s podcast, MSCHE Pillars of Change, which highlights diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives by member institutions.
Participating as both a president and a Commissioner, Dr. Steve Rose, Passaic County Community College, encouraged his peers to participate in the peer evaluation process and asked the presidents to consider becoming a Commissioner in the future. The presidents expressed an appreciation for the opportunity to engage in this way as well as an interest in the Commission continuing to highlight the importance of accreditation on their campuses and the need for campus-wide engagement.
The virtual meeting was supported by Ms. Christina D’Argenio, Executive Assistant to the President and Manager of Commission and Mr. Brian Kirschner, Senior Director for Communications and Public Relations
The next Virtual Coffee with the Commission is planned for March 15, 2021, with presidents from Maryland and the District of Columbia, and the intention is to roll out additional opportunities with more cohorts in the coming months.
