MSCHE Statement on the Sudden Closure of The Art Institute of Pittsburgh
The United States District Court, Northern District of Ohio, Eastern Division, appointed a federal equity receiver, custodian, and liquidator for The Art Institute of Pittsburgh on Jan. 18, 2019. The Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE) has been working with the institution, the federal equity receiver, and the United States Department of Education since then to determine the status of the institution.
On Friday, March 8, 2019, at 5:09 pm, the MSCHE learned that the federal equity receiver decided to close The Art Institute of Pittsburgh that same day, despite repeated reminders of required Commission processes and without appropriate notice to The Art Institute of Pittsburgh students, faculty, and staff and without appropriate notice to MSCHE. The MSCHE has outreached to the federal equity receiver for information on the status of the institution due March 11, 2019.
In addition, the MSCHE is following the activities of the Court relating to the receivership and will take action to end the accreditation of The Art Institute of Pittsburgh as soon as it is appropriate to do so. At this time, The Art Institute of Pittsburgh remains accredited by MSCHE in order to help facilitate transfer of credit and program completion.
The receiver has not provided a teach-out plan as required by MSCHE policy and procedures; therefore, the Commission is unable to offer details to students or other constituents about transcripts, teach-out agreements with other institutions, transfer fairs, or other information relating to the closure. Should the MSCHE receive teach-out information from the receiver, it will be posted online at the MSCHE website.
