About the Institute
The Self-Study Institute is a two-day program, sponsored by the Commission on Higher Education, for representatives from institutions in the Middle States region that are designing either their first or their decennial self-study in preparation for peer review.
Eligibility
Institutions in the Middle States region that are preparing to develop a design (those scheduled for review in 2014–2015) are invited to send up to TWO representatives to the 2012 Self-Study Institute. Although the circumstances at various institutions are different, the chair or co-chairs of an institution’s self-study steering committee should be among the representatives at The Self-Study Institute.
Preliminary Agenda & Schedule
Participants will meet in plenary sessions for panel discussions and other presentations on basic concepts and strategies relating to the self-study process. In addition, breakout sessions will enable participants from similar sectors to discuss with each other the critical issues and related materials.
An experienced self-study steering committee chair and a Commission staff member will be assigned to each breakout group to serve as resources during the peer-learning experiences and to consult with participants on the application of principles to the unique factors on each campus.
Participants will have formal and informal opportunities to meet with their institution's MSCHE staff liaison. Institutional representatives should be prepared to discuss with their liaison the self-study planning that has already been done, when they would like the liaison to conduct the self-study preparation visit to the institution, and any questions they have about their particular self-study.
Study Materials
All participants will be expected to review the following materials before arriving at the Institute:
- A sample self-study design, a completed self-study, and a team report for an actual institution, which participants will analyze and critique with the guidance of experienced self-study leaders and Commission staff.
In addition, the following key resources shed light on the Commission’s expectations for the self-study process. Presenters, facilitators, and participants will refer to these resources.
- Characteristics of Excellence in Higher Education, the Commission’s statement of its accreditation standards;
- Self-Study: Creating a Useful Process and Report;
- Developing Research & Communication Skills: Guidelines for Information Literacy in the Curriculum;
- Student Learning Assessment: Options and Resources;
- Team Visits: Conducting and Hosting an Evaluation Visit; and
- The Commission’s "Substantive Change Policy" and "Substantive Change Processes" policy statements.

Registration for the Institute is by invitation only. Each eligible institution is guaranteed up to TWO seats in the Institute. Registrations will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. Additional seats may be available if another institution declines to participate. Please contact Victoria Clark, Events Supervisor at vclark@msche.org, for additional seats.
You must register on-line and use the registration code provided with the invitation materials. All payments must be by credit card. Checks and purchase orders cannot be accepted. The deadline for registration is October 5, 2012. Advanced materials will be mailed after October 5, so that participants can begin reviewing the materials required for effective participation in discussions.
Fees
The fee for each representative from an institution is $565.00 per person, which includes presentations, discussions, materials, and meals. Travel and accommodations are the responsibility of participants. NOTE: No on-site registration available.
Cancellation Policy: Cancellations must be received no later than October 12, 2012, to qualify for a refund, less a $75.00 processing fee.
Accommodations
A room block has been reserved at the DoubleTree by Hilton Downtown Wilmington / Legal District. Room rates at the Hilton are $129 single or double, plus local taxes and fees. Reservations must be made before October 8, 2012. Reservations made after that date will be on a space-and rate-available basis.
